Life After Yachting launch

Life After Yachting – Superyacht Crew Portal

Life After Yachting is the first month-long virtual (and totally free) event to help superyacht crew around the world find success when they are ready to move from onboard to onshore. We are proud to be the marketing machine behind this fantastic new project, both helping to let yacht crew know that there is a range of people ready and willing to offer guidance, and providing free marketing advice for crew looking to start their own business.

This unique 100% virtual experience combines a global online portal for crew to connect with land-based superyacht businesses and interested parties from other luxury industries, a business incubator for entrepreneurial crew supported by the ‘Kraken’s Den’ of industry leaders, talks with internationally acclaimed schools to facilitate the recognition of superyacht qualifications, and a virtual LIVE interactive one-day event.

Created to support crew through what is often a difficult transition from a busy career at sea to finding stable and fulfilling land-based work, Life After Yachting gives superyacht professionals the chance to give back to the crew that have supported them over the years.

Life After Yachting virtual event

Virtual Month-Long Event | 1 – 31 September 2020

During September, captains, crew and businesses can research and qualify each other via the virtual superyacht jobs fair.

The Life After Yachting portal is akin to a professional matchmaking tool that helps crew to find the best onshore connections. From crew looking for onshore work to companies looking to hire the best of the best globally, this platform presents skills and experiences obtained and required. By optimising connections, it enables both crew and companies to secure virtual meetings and online interviews.

Many captains and crew find it hard to transition to a fulfilling onshore role when they are ready to leave life at sea. The superyacht industry is a rewarding yet highly niche sector, which means crew can find it hard to meet new employers who understand the transferable skills set that crew possess.

Life After Yachting will bring together great employers such as shipyards and superyacht services, alongside businesses from alternative luxury sectors who actively want to employ yacht crew, and value the aptitude and experience they can bring to their company.

Life After Yachting Krakens Den

Kraken’s Den business incubator and LAY Support Network

The second element of Life After Yachting was launched to support entrepreneurial crew. Night watches and downtime at sea can give crew the time to think up fantastic business ideas, but shaping those ideas into a successful long-term business is a complex task.

Life After Yachting connects crew with a team of experts who can help to develop those ideas and assist in creating and actioning the perfect business plan and pitch.

During the virtual live event crew will have the opportunity to present their pitch to the ‘Kraken’s Den’ of business advisors, all of whom are proven and successful leaders in yachting.

This years Krakens include, John Courtney, Managing Director of FunAir and Will Faimatea, founder and director of Bond TM joining Life After Yachting founder and start-up expert Titta Uoti-Väisänen, our very own Sarrah Macey leading on superyacht marketing and AnnaMari Lammassaari from SourceRiviera.

During the early stages of this business incubator it became clear that crew also welcome general advice and support, from lifestyle coaching to adapting their finances. The LAY support network was established for all crew looking for a Life After Yachting, with online supporters able and willing to give advice on numerous real-world situations.

Partners and supporters include, John from FunAir, Tony from YACHTNEEDS, Will and Angela from Bond TM, Anna from Anna Petchell Coaching, Emma from Church House Investments, Jessica from WilsonHalligan, Joey from G.U.E.S.T., Susanne from La Roches Hospitality School, Caitlin from ISWAN, Pandora from Art On Yachts, Jesse from Eventilla, Iiro from Tavata Events and our very own Sarrah Macey.

Life After Yachting Virtual Live Event

Virtual LIVE one-day event | 18th September 2020

The third element is a one-day live virtual event on the 18th September where partner companies will each broadcast a 20-minute segment explaining who they are, what they do, and who they are looking to work with. This allows crew to find out more about potential future employers, advisors and the LAY support network.

In the Krakens Den, entrepreneurial crew will showcase their business plans, ideas and pitches and present them to the leaders of yachting.

The Virtual LIVE Event will be broadcast securely via Zoom and live on Superyacht Radio throughout the day and here is the full program.

superyacht bunkering in Tunisia

Tunisia is a safe haven for superyachts post Covid-19

Tunisia is a land with diversity at its core. Flanked by the hot Sahara Desert and the azure blue Mediterranean Sea, it weaves a rich tapestry of culture, cuisine and archaeological wonders. More significantly, in the wake of Covid-19, it has elevated itself to be one of the safest superyacht cruising grounds around, to date recording some of the lowest numbers of coronavirus cases throughout Europe. As a result, border restrictions are due to be lifted on 27 June, and Tunisia is now open for business.

As a prized superyacht cruising ground, Tunisia is adept at providing seclusion and security in equal balance. But when the coronavirus pandemic hit in March 2020, swift action from the Tunisian government meant the country entered into a highly effective early quarantine period. A country-wide lockdown commenced on 21 March with borders closing across land, sea and air, and a night-time curfew included.

Tunisian citizens who were abroad at the start of lockdown were safely repatriated by the government, with a required 14-day isolation period spent in hotels at the expense of the Tunisian government. Three months on the country’s diligence has paid off two-fold; it is among the first in Europe to reopen its borders to foreign visitors and remains a safe haven for yachts and tourists alike.

To quantify this, Tunisia has just 5 active cases per million population, compared with Spain that has 1329, and France that has 1362 active cases per million population. Numbers taken from the John Hopkins Trust data set on 8th June 2020.

Map showing active Covid cases in Europe

From 27 June, yachts will be welcomed back to cruise Tunisia’s waters and resume their regular maritime services, including duty-free bunkering. Strict procedures and safety protocols for the hospitality industry and wider businesses are being rolled out in preparation for this date. Working in accordance with guidelines laid out by the World Health Organisation (WHO) hospitality staff are undergoing additional training to be able to competently undertake newly required safety procedures. A concerted effort is being made nationwide to ensure the outstanding successful management of the coronavirus pandemic continues once normal daily life resumes.

Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organizations (UNWTO), states: “Tunisia’s successful experience in the fight against the coronavirus sends reassuring signals to the rest of the world. They are of one of the safest countries in terms of health, that tourists can visit.”

Kim Williams of Yacht Services Tunisia, comments: “Tunisia has been through a lot over the past nine years, but each time it rises up against the odds. Now as the end of lockdown is in sight and with our international boarders about to reopen, we should all be very thankful for the swift action that the Tunisian government has taken. We will of course follow strict sanitary procedures when we welcome our yachts into port and will continue to follow all government protocols as they are released.”

From ancient ruins to sea therapy spa treatments, and pristine golf courses to a collection of fully serviced prestige superyacht marinas, Tunisia is waiting with its arms open wide to welcome its owners, captains and crew a safe return to its inviting and protected shores.

Exciting new partnership between FunAir and Seal Superyachts

An exciting new partnership has been announced between innovative leaders FunAir and Seal Superyachts, the most established and longest serving yacht agents in Asia and the Pacific.

The deal will allow Seal Superyachts to supply a full compliment of custom FunAir yacht inflatables and 23 in stock QuickShip solutions for any last minute charter requests. Seal are hailed as the charter brokers best friend, and they will now be able to provide Climbing Walls, Yacht Slides, Yacht Golf, Beach Loungers and a host of products that will fit most mid range superyachts that are so prevalent in the area.

Seal will also be an official FunAir service centre and will provide cleaning, drying and maintenance servicing for all FunAir products. Seal can arrange to pick up the inflatables and make sure they are clean, dry and ready to inflate the fun before dropping them back to the yacht. This service is perfect for yachts that perhaps don’t deploy their toys for longer periods during off season, or when the owners are away and want to make sure they are packed and stored correctly.

Adam Frost, Managing Director of Seal Superyachts commented, “The charter market in and around the Pacific and Indian Oceans and Australasia continues to strengthen. There has also been a rise in European yachts visiting the areas with a full compliment of toys and tenders.

“We’ve definitely noticed an upsurge in requests for Yacht Slides, Climbing Walls and other inflatable FunAir yacht toys from our resident yachts, and I put it down to them seeing the European yachts with all their toys out and wanting some of that action!

“The charter market is fast moving here as well, so being able to fulfil last minute requests and deliver the products they want in a week or so is an attractive solution for our clients.”

John Courtney, Managing Director of FunAir commented, “ We are delighted to welcome Adam and the team at Seal Superyachts to the FunAir family. We have worked together in the past when they have provided fantastic logistic support on some of our large custom orders being delivered in Asia.

“They are the perfect fit to represent the FunAir brand in this region and we are safe in the knowledge that FunAir products will be delivered and serviced, efficiently and effectively, meaning more time on the water having fun for the guests. What’s not to love!

Lanzarote Superyacht Destination landscape

Why Lanzarote has become a popular superyacht destination

Year round sunshine, exotic landscapes and exhilarating water sports conditions are not the only reasons to visit this newly popular superyacht destination.

The Canary Island of Lanzarote is perfectly placed en route from Europe to the Caribbean and is the closest land to the Atlantic crossing. Three luxury marinas and the Tourism board on the island have partnered to form Lanzarote Superyacht Destination having extended their superyacht services and shipyard facilities to accommodate superyachts up to 110 metres.

Lanzarote Superyacht Destination Marina Rubicón
Marina Rubicón

Long and short term berthing is available and the experienced shipyard can accept extensive refits and repairs, meaning the island is already earning a solid reputation within the yachting community.

Always a popular destination for the sailing community who like to take a break and source provisions before sailing to America or the Caribbean, Lanzarote is celebrated for the near perfect year round climate and water sports conditions as well as having excellent tax benefits.

Lanzarote Superyacht Destination Marina Lanzarote
Marina Lanzarote

Three established luxury marinas each with its own personality and selection of world-class restaurants, bars and international stores provide a total of 1368 berths and 34 convenient superyacht berths.

The recently upgraded shipyard now has hoisting facilities that include a giant 820-tonne travel lift, over 20,000m² of yard area, two deep keel pits and a range of specialist services.

Lanzarote Superyacht Destination Marina Caleros
Marina Caleros

In 2015 Lanzarote was the first destination to receive Biosphere Responsible Tourism certification as a fully sustainable destination. The eco-friendly culture is ingrained into daily life on the island. You will be offered sustainable alternatives to most throw away items, provisioning can be done with minimal packaging, and for those yachts staying a while for a refit or repair, there is no better place to research and find materials that sit well with your own green policies.

Lanzarote has a gentle and temperate year-round climate, protected from major weather systems, making access for yachts easy throughout the year. The small amount of annual rainfall brings a welcome advantage for completing external painting or lengthy varnishing jobs, and offers ideal conditions for experiencing some of the curated superyacht island experiences now available.

Visiting the unique national parks full of extinct volcanoes should be high on your to do list, as well as enjoying some of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing conditions in the world. Perhaps shopping at Dolce and Gabbana or Gucci without leaving the marina is more your bag, or having your own private tour of the most unusual vineyards you will ever have the pleasure of visiting.

Lanzarote Superyacht Destination Papagayo beach
Papagayo beach

The foodies amongst you will find Spanish and South American dishes intertwined with traditional berber recipes and elegant Mediterranean flavours.

Bib Gourmand restaurants blend world cuisine with traditional favourites that focus on locally sourced, organic ingredients and deliver simple dishes that are all about the taste and less about the ceremony.

The local white wine is truly outstanding and really must be tasted. The volcanic soil brings a uniquely fertile taste and the island has a number of hugely successful vineyards. The local cheeses compliment this wonderfully and are a delicacy in their own right. Delicious craft beers are a recent development with several emerging breweries creating beers each with their own personalities.

We could go on… and on. Find out more about this delightful and welcoming superyacht destination on their new website www.lanzarotesuperyacht.com or email info@lanzarotesuperyacht.com for further information and bookings.

This wonderful destination will be hosting a celebration during Monaco Yacht Show at booth DS1 just inside the entrance closest to Rascasse. Please join the team and share their famously delicious Lanzarote wines and cheese, complimented with music played by world class DJs. The celebration starts at 17:00 on Thursday 26th September. See you there!

The Superyacht Report Magazine front cover

Sarrah Macey writes guest column for The Superyacht Report

I love to write. I don’t mind if it’s a blog, news story, social media post, website copy or some editorial. Wordsmithing is definitely my favourite part of the job and I was thrilled to be asked by The Superyacht Group to be a guest columnist for the owners section in the latest edition of The Superyacht Report magazine.

As this was the Tenders and Toys edition I of course waxed lyrical about my favourite superyacht toy manufacturer FunAir and it was a great opportunity to explore the safety benefits that many of their products provide.

It’s an unusual combination, fun and safety, but when you dive deeper they really should go hand in hand. To allow yacht owners, their family and guests to enjoy their floating haven to the fullest, safety first should be paramount for Captains and crews. The fact that FunAir design and engineer their products to be as safe and easy to use as possible for both the guests, and the crew setting everything up, is a testament to the positive ethos and innovative thinking behind the brand.

I’m sure you all have a subscription and are enjoying your copy of the magazine featuring my column, but if you don’t you can get digital and paper copies via this link.

https://shop.thesuperyachtgroup.com/subscriptions

I promise it’s definitely worth a read!

Now.. About that pie

As much as I love to write, I do find it harder to write about myself. Funny really. I can pump out page after page of (I think) interesting prose for our superyacht business clients, but when The Superyacht Group asked me to come up with four interesting facts about myself, I found myself stuck after the first one. I suppose making a pie for the Queen of England is a pretty hard act to follow – Find me at one of the boat shows and I will fill you in on that story – but the process has encouraged me to research the psychology behind it being harder to write about yourself than others.

Everything we do at Global Superyacht Marketing from graphic design and video editing to social media, building websites and writing copy is based around how the superyacht community think and what motivates them, so it will be interesting to reflect on how we can use this to further support our clients.

I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback on my column so if you would like to get in touch you can reach me at sarrah@globalsuperyachtmarketing.com

Thanks

Superyacht Tenders & Toys launches eco-friendly watersports toy rental service in the Mediterranean

Leading independent tenders and toys consultancy expands European offering.

This month, Queen’s Award winner Superyacht Tenders & Toys (SYTT) has announced the opening of its new superyacht toys rental division in Monaco. The move comes in response to rising consumer demand and offers the company a base outside of the UK in the midst of uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

RS Aero foiling available from Superyacht Tenders and Toys

Open for business from spring 2019, the new department will specialise in eco-friendly rentals, including FunAir exclusive inflatables, RS sailing dinghies and electric toys such as the Seabob, Lift eFoil and bikes. Based in Monaco, SYTT’s rental service will be managed by Roxane Ducruet. Having worked in the yachting industry for a number of years, Roxane has a wealth of experience and a wide network of contacts having lived in Monaco her whole life.

SYTT managing director Josh Richardson commented, “With charter guests increasingly coming to SYTT to hire the latest and greatest watersports toys, investment into a Mediterranean rental outlet is the natural next step for the company.

“We have been supplying other rental operators throughout the Mediterranean for a long time, so it is a logical move to bring it in-house. By managing the rentals ourselves, we can offer clients our usual efficient service and ensure they get the best products at the best price.”

Josh continued, “Roxane is motivated, knowledgable and well-connected; she is a great fit for SYTT and we are delighted to welcome her to the team.”

SYTT will ensure competitive rates with broker-friendly pricing and credits towards future purchases with the aim of building a repeat-purchase customer base. One-way rentals will also be an option, with SYTT collecting the toys from the charter end destination.

SYTT sales agent Roxane Ducruet added, “ All the rental toys on offer are either electric or inflatable, which is not only better for the environment but they are also much more efficient to maintain versus petrol-powered toys. With our next-day shipping service, we will be able to offer a choice of toys delivered to anywhere in the Mediterranean at short notice.”

The portfolio of products available to hire includes Seabobs, Lift eFoil boards, Radinn Jetboards, RS sailing dinghies, yacht slides and a selection of in-stock inflatables from leading superyacht specialists FunAir. Stand-out toys on offer also include Yacht Golf, Yacht Joust and inflatable sailboats.

John Courtney, MD of Yachting at FunAir commented, “We are delighted to be chosen by SYTT as their exclusive inflatables partner for this venture. Our in-stock inflatables regularly assist charter vessels with last minute requests from guests, now they will be able to rent or buy a full toy box from Roxane and the team which is fantastic.”

In addition to watersports toys, SYTT has a fleet of Nautique boats for rental worldwide. From April, a new Super Air Nautique 210 will be available for central Mediterranean charter, which comes in addition to two G23s in the Greece and Ibiza areas. For US and Caribbean based yachts, SYTT has a Nautique G25 based in Fort Lauderdale.
