Life After Yachting launch

Life After Yachting – Superyacht Crew Portal

Life After Yachting is the first month-long virtual (and totally free) event to help superyacht crew around the world find success when they are ready to move from onboard to onshore. We are proud to be the marketing machine behind this fantastic new project, both helping to let yacht crew know that there is a range of people ready and willing to offer guidance, and providing free marketing advice for crew looking to start their own business.

This unique 100% virtual experience combines a global online portal for crew to connect with land-based superyacht businesses and interested parties from other luxury industries, a business incubator for entrepreneurial crew supported by the ‘Kraken’s Den’ of industry leaders, talks with internationally acclaimed schools to facilitate the recognition of superyacht qualifications, and a virtual LIVE interactive one-day event.

Created to support crew through what is often a difficult transition from a busy career at sea to finding stable and fulfilling land-based work, Life After Yachting gives superyacht professionals the chance to give back to the crew that have supported them over the years.

Life After Yachting virtual event

Virtual Month-Long Event | 1 – 31 September 2020

During September, captains, crew and businesses can research and qualify each other via the virtual superyacht jobs fair.

The Life After Yachting portal is akin to a professional matchmaking tool that helps crew to find the best onshore connections. From crew looking for onshore work to companies looking to hire the best of the best globally, this platform presents skills and experiences obtained and required. By optimising connections, it enables both crew and companies to secure virtual meetings and online interviews.

Many captains and crew find it hard to transition to a fulfilling onshore role when they are ready to leave life at sea. The superyacht industry is a rewarding yet highly niche sector, which means crew can find it hard to meet new employers who understand the transferable skills set that crew possess.

Life After Yachting will bring together great employers such as shipyards and superyacht services, alongside businesses from alternative luxury sectors who actively want to employ yacht crew, and value the aptitude and experience they can bring to their company.

Life After Yachting Krakens Den

Kraken’s Den business incubator and LAY Support Network

The second element of Life After Yachting was launched to support entrepreneurial crew. Night watches and downtime at sea can give crew the time to think up fantastic business ideas, but shaping those ideas into a successful long-term business is a complex task.

Life After Yachting connects crew with a team of experts who can help to develop those ideas and assist in creating and actioning the perfect business plan and pitch.

During the virtual live event crew will have the opportunity to present their pitch to the ‘Kraken’s Den’ of business advisors, all of whom are proven and successful leaders in yachting.

This years Krakens include, John Courtney, Managing Director of FunAir and Will Faimatea, founder and director of Bond TM joining Life After Yachting founder and start-up expert Titta Uoti-Väisänen, our very own Sarrah Macey leading on superyacht marketing and AnnaMari Lammassaari from SourceRiviera.

During the early stages of this business incubator it became clear that crew also welcome general advice and support, from lifestyle coaching to adapting their finances. The LAY support network was established for all crew looking for a Life After Yachting, with online supporters able and willing to give advice on numerous real-world situations.

Partners and supporters include, John from FunAir, Tony from YACHTNEEDS, Will and Angela from Bond TM, Anna from Anna Petchell Coaching, Emma from Church House Investments, Jessica from WilsonHalligan, Joey from G.U.E.S.T., Susanne from La Roches Hospitality School, Caitlin from ISWAN, Pandora from Art On Yachts, Jesse from Eventilla, Iiro from Tavata Events and our very own Sarrah Macey.

Playing around with FunAir at MYS 2017

FunAir traditionally inflate the Fun each year at Monaco Yacht Show and launch something new to the superyacht toy market. This year they will be showcasing the new FunAir Playground and Junior BigAir Blob.

A redesign of a firm family favourite, the FunAir Playground has a slide, climbing frame and leaving off point for a smaller version of the very popular BigAir Blob, which like its big brother has stabilising outriggers that stop it turning in the ocean, and an inflatable stand-off that keeps it in place. Friends and siblings can jump from the playground straight onto the blob and launch their partners into the air.

FunAir Playground Junior BigAir Blob

The Playground can be tethered to the yacht out at anchor, and also works as the perfect accessory for families when it is secured in shallower waters on beach days.

Standing 3.5m tall when inflated, the playground has non-slip material on the steps and top, comfort grip climbing holds and ultra slick vinyl on the slide. This eliminates the need for a coversheet and reduces weight and pack size. The Junior Big Air Blob is also made from commercial grade 1000 denier PVC with FR and UV ratings. Total set up time is just 30 minutes.

John Courtney, MD of Yachting commented, “Part of the reason we work hard on developing our innovation partnerships is to make sure we get regular feedback on our existing products, what the owners, guests and crew would like to see in the future, what affects the use of our products and where we can improve everyone’s yachting experience.

“The Playground was developed because of our partnership with Titan Fleet who needed a durable playground that was robust and could be used by kids large and small. We redesigned it to make it lighter, taller and more stable. Combining the Playground with our Junior BigAir Blob gave Titan Fleet the perfect activity centre for their fleet of charter yachts.”

The redesigned FunAir Playground with Junior BigAir Blob will be on the water, displayed outside the official MYS Captains and Crew Lounge next to the Yacht Club throughout Monaco Yacht Show 2017.

To contact FunAir directly, arrange a meeting during MYS, or to pre-order please email yachting@funair.com, or call John Courtney on +1 512 751 4276.

Porto Mirabello superyacht marina

A Season of Success for Porto Mirabello, La Spezia, Italy.

Still a relatively new marina, built out of the sea in 2010, Porto Mirabello is enjoying a very busy and successful summer season in 2017.

This year they have noticed a marked increase in seasonal transits hosting 55 % more superyachts in 2017 compared to the previous year.  As the only dedicated luxury marina for superyachts up to 130m in Italy, many of the most exclusive yachts have stayed at the port in the last few months including MY Savannah, MY Main, MY Grace E, MY BookEnds, MY Just J’s, MY Achillies, MY Emuna, MY Romea, MY Samar and MY Serenity.

Owner of the marina, Alessandro Menozzi commented, “We have worked hard to ensure our marina has all the services and facilities needed for busy yachts. We make life easy for Captains who visit the marina, providing a 7* multilingual concierge team who will solve any problem, and help to make staying at the marina the preferred choice for every yacht.

Our Wellness Centre, 11 restaurants and bars, 25m swimming pool, private BBQ terrace and gourmet food delivery service mean that crew can facilitate a quick turn over between charters, and find time to relax in the marina.”

Location plays an important role in deciding which port to visit, whether you are a charter or private vessel. Porto Mirabello, in La Spezia is in the middle of a city full of cultural highlights, and next to the most prestigious locations in Italy such as Forte dei Marmi, Viareggio and Portofino. Porto Venere is just 2NM, Forte Marmi a short car journey and you can be in Milan in 45 minutes from the helicopter pad. The marina, nestled in the Gulf of Poets, is also among the most sheltered in the world.

Security has been an important factor in why more yachts have stayed at Porto Mirabello. The team has achieved the approval of the Port Facility Security Plan, which is necessary for the alignment of the harbour structure for the International Ship and Port Facilities Security Code certification. This means the marina has greater control measures in place for access to areas intended to host yachts greater than 500 tons, and owners and Captains can enjoy a completely private space in the Megayacht Quay and Poets Lounge and Terrace.

Porto Mirabello offers a unique combination of an elegant, clean and luxurious marina with top level superyacht services, packaged with the convenience of having a dedicated shipyard on site, and the back up of 80% of the most important Italian shipyards within 22 NM of the port.

Follow Porto Mirabello on social media to find out about the latest activities and many new improvements to the port.
