Life After Yachting launch

Life After Yachting – Superyacht Crew Portal

Life After Yachting is the first month-long virtual (and totally free) event to help superyacht crew around the world find success when they are ready to move from onboard to onshore. We are proud to be the marketing machine behind this fantastic new project, both helping to let yacht crew know that there is a range of people ready and willing to offer guidance, and providing free marketing advice for crew looking to start their own business.

This unique 100% virtual experience combines a global online portal for crew to connect with land-based superyacht businesses and interested parties from other luxury industries, a business incubator for entrepreneurial crew supported by the ‘Kraken’s Den’ of industry leaders, talks with internationally acclaimed schools to facilitate the recognition of superyacht qualifications, and a virtual LIVE interactive one-day event.

Created to support crew through what is often a difficult transition from a busy career at sea to finding stable and fulfilling land-based work, Life After Yachting gives superyacht professionals the chance to give back to the crew that have supported them over the years.

Life After Yachting virtual event

Virtual Month-Long Event | 1 – 31 September 2020

During September, captains, crew and businesses can research and qualify each other via the virtual superyacht jobs fair.

The Life After Yachting portal is akin to a professional matchmaking tool that helps crew to find the best onshore connections. From crew looking for onshore work to companies looking to hire the best of the best globally, this platform presents skills and experiences obtained and required. By optimising connections, it enables both crew and companies to secure virtual meetings and online interviews.

Many captains and crew find it hard to transition to a fulfilling onshore role when they are ready to leave life at sea. The superyacht industry is a rewarding yet highly niche sector, which means crew can find it hard to meet new employers who understand the transferable skills set that crew possess.

Life After Yachting will bring together great employers such as shipyards and superyacht services, alongside businesses from alternative luxury sectors who actively want to employ yacht crew, and value the aptitude and experience they can bring to their company.

Life After Yachting Krakens Den

Kraken’s Den business incubator and LAY Support Network

The second element of Life After Yachting was launched to support entrepreneurial crew. Night watches and downtime at sea can give crew the time to think up fantastic business ideas, but shaping those ideas into a successful long-term business is a complex task.

Life After Yachting connects crew with a team of experts who can help to develop those ideas and assist in creating and actioning the perfect business plan and pitch.

During the virtual live event crew will have the opportunity to present their pitch to the ‘Kraken’s Den’ of business advisors, all of whom are proven and successful leaders in yachting.

This years Krakens include, John Courtney, Managing Director of FunAir and Will Faimatea, founder and director of Bond TM joining Life After Yachting founder and start-up expert Titta Uoti-Väisänen, our very own Sarrah Macey leading on superyacht marketing and AnnaMari Lammassaari from SourceRiviera.

During the early stages of this business incubator it became clear that crew also welcome general advice and support, from lifestyle coaching to adapting their finances. The LAY support network was established for all crew looking for a Life After Yachting, with online supporters able and willing to give advice on numerous real-world situations.

This allows crew to find out more about potential future employers, advisors and the LAY support network.

Superyacht Tenders & Toys launches eco-friendly watersports toy rental service in the Mediterranean

Leading independent tenders and toys consultancy expands European offering.

This month, Queen’s Award winner Superyacht Tenders & Toys (SYTT) has announced the opening of its new superyacht toys rental division in Monaco. The move comes in response to rising consumer demand and offers the company a base outside of the UK in the midst of uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

RS Aero foiling available from Superyacht Tenders and Toys

Open for business from spring 2019, the new department will specialise in eco-friendly rentals, including FunAir exclusive inflatables, RS sailing dinghies and electric toys such as the Seabob, Lift eFoil and bikes. Based in Monaco, SYTT’s rental service will be managed by Roxane Ducruet. Having worked in the yachting industry for a number of years, Roxane has a wealth of experience and a wide network of contacts having lived in Monaco her whole life.

SYTT managing director Josh Richardson commented, “With charter guests increasingly coming to SYTT to hire the latest and greatest watersports toys, investment into a Mediterranean rental outlet is the natural next step for the company.

“We have been supplying other rental operators throughout the Mediterranean for a long time, so it is a logical move to bring it in-house. By managing the rentals ourselves, we can offer clients our usual efficient service and ensure they get the best products at the best price.”

Josh continued, “Roxane is motivated, knowledgable and well-connected; she is a great fit for SYTT and we are delighted to welcome her to the team.”

SYTT will ensure competitive rates with broker-friendly pricing and credits towards future purchases with the aim of building a repeat-purchase customer base. One-way rentals will also be an option, with SYTT collecting the toys from the charter end destination.

SYTT sales agent Roxane Ducruet added, “ All the rental toys on offer are either electric or inflatable, which is not only better for the environment but they are also much more efficient to maintain versus petrol-powered toys. With our next-day shipping service, we will be able to offer a choice of toys delivered to anywhere in the Mediterranean at short notice.”

The portfolio of products available to hire includes Seabobs, Lift eFoil boards, Radinn Jetboards, RS sailing dinghies, yacht slides and a selection of in-stock inflatables from leading superyacht specialists FunAir. Stand-out toys on offer also include Yacht Golf, Yacht Joust and inflatable sailboats.

John Courtney, MD of Yachting at FunAir commented, “We are delighted to be chosen by SYTT as their exclusive inflatables partner for this venture. Our in-stock inflatables regularly assist charter vessels with last minute requests from guests, now they will be able to rent or buy a full toy box from Roxane and the team which is fantastic.”

In addition to watersports toys, SYTT has a fleet of Nautique boats for rental worldwide. From April, a new Super Air Nautique 210 will be available for central Mediterranean charter, which comes in addition to two G23s in the Greece and Ibiza areas. For US and Caribbean based yachts, SYTT has a Nautique G25 based in Fort Lauderdale.

In just 30 minutes, the participants will be preparing their best lacto vegetarian starters and desserts and a full vegan main course. We can’t wait to see what they come up with! Luxury Cars at The Monaco Yacht Show 2018

For the Monaco Yacht Show 2018 the third edition of the Car Deck exhibition is once again set to showcase the very best in tailor-made, luxury cars, customised to the requirements and tastes of their owners, in the same way the superyachts are.

From September 26th to 29th, show visitors, owners and lovers of superyachts and exquisite machinery will have the opportunity to admire a brand-new range of luxury vehicles on display on the Car Deck of the Monaco Yacht Show. This year the MYS has joined forces with manufacturers specializing in tailor-made and custom designed vehicles and hypercars.

BRABUS Classic MB

“The new superyachting clientele is looking for new lifestyle experiences, new sensations to share. When price is not an obstacle to getting what is best the wealthy younger generation seeks more personal experiences that reflect their own identity,” suggests Gaëlle Tallarida, General Manager of the MYS. “Building a big yacht remains the ultimate in made-to-measure. In the same way the Car Deck reflects the superyachting lifestyle with a display of superlatively luxurious vehicles transformed to order according to their owners’ desires.”

Ford GT40

The Card Deck, located on Quai Antoine Ier in Port Hercules, will present a selection of about a dozen cars and a motorbike that are as original as they are exceptional, manufactured in limited editions or as unique prototypes, some of which will be available for test drives by potential buyers.

For its first participation in the Car Deck, the Italian company ARES Design will unveil its superb redesigned two-door Bentley Coupé, based on the four-door Mulsanne 2017 model and built in very small numbers. The new look given to the Coupé by ARES Design involves a total transformation of the bodywork, mainly using hand-worked carbon fibre and aluminium. Prices for this model, for MYS participants, start at € 715,000.

ARES Bentley

Fans of 1960s British motor-cycles will certainly appreciate the ARES Design trial, based on the minimalist style of the latest BMW R nineT, with a sublime vintage look combined with modern performance levels.

ARES Design trial

ARES Design will most probably also showcase the finest version so far of the emblematic Land Rover Defender. A genuine rebuild for this exceptionally robust vehicle that combines a luxury interior with a very high level of performance thanks to a tailor-made turbocharged V8 engine. Prices for this ARES 4×4 built in limited numbers, only 53 to date, start at € 215,000.

ARES Land Rover Defender

This year MYS participants will have the unique opportunity to meet with Alexandre Danton, French automobile designer and artist. Starting with a given model, or even a wreck, Alexandre builds a chassis and bodywork from customized parts, making the vehicle a unique work of art. His company, Danton Art Kustoms, will present two outstanding hot rods: a unique version of the Lamborghini Espada Edition CHD (Super Cars V12) in pure neo-vintage style with an astounding and refined new exterior; and a 1987 Porsche 911 Targa which, with its aggressive aesthetics, flamboyant red paintwork and redesigned racing body, is customized with a Bentley Turbo engine providing exceptional power (400 BHP).

Danton Porsche

Hemmels returns to the Car Deck and will display the finest Mercedes-Benz SL series restorations. Whether it’s the iconic 300SL Gullwing or Roadster, the sporty 190SL or stunning 280SL Pagoda, each car is taken back to its bare metal beginnings. Every component is painstakingly returned to original factory specification, or beyond. In the spotlight too is a new generation of hypercars, including the spectacular Milan Red model. Built by the Austrian motor manufacturer Milan Automotive, the first and only hypercar producer in Austria, Milan Red is at one and the same time a very fast car, a design object and a source of exceptional driving sensations. This luxury vehicle, with a power output of 1,325 HP for a weight of 1,300 kilos, is limited to 99 units at 2 million euros each.

Hemmels luxury cars

For its second participation in the Car Deck, Gentleman Car, the official French dealer for genuine American Shelby cars, will present three prestige models. Hand crafted with total respect for the spirit of the original, the FIA of the Shelby Cobra 289 FIA Continuation Edition series reproduces the characteristics of the race car driven by Dan Gurney in 1963 and 1964 (prices from € 159,000). The Shelby Cobra 427 S / C Continuation is based on a robust chassis built from 4-inch tubes and equipped with a 7-liter Ford V8 engine (prices from € 148,500). The Ford GT40 MKII Continuation is a perfect clone of the car that won at Le Mans in 1966. 90% of the parts are interchangeable with the vintage model! It is also the only vehicle officially authorized to use the GT40 name, as the chassis number testifies (prices from € 218,900).

Luxury car BRABUS-900-Cabrio

BRABUS will show a selection of customized Mercedes models. This German company is the largest specialist in the transformation of Mercedes vehicles and one of the leaders in the development and integration of innovative, functional business multi-media systems for vehicles. This manufacturer is well-known for its tailor-made luxury cars, combining outstanding performance with interior fittings of the highest quality (the models to be displayed will be announced shortly). Alongside its vehicles BRABUS will also be displaying its luxury 11-meter “hyper”-tender, the BRABUS Shadow 800, as part of the Tenders & Toys floating exhibition. Built in partnership with Axopar Boats the tender is distinguished by its use of the latest high-tech components and its thoroughbred exterior design in BRABUS’s distinctive signature color: black. For the first time on the international stage MYS visitors will be able to test the BRABUS Shadow 800 in the water.

Exploring Tunisia as a Superyacht Destination

Superyachts have been flocking back to the wonderfully exotic Tunisia after the over-cautious travel ban was lifted last year. We were very privileged to be invited for a tour by the Tunisian Ministry of Tourism and are happy to share the beauty of this northern African, French/British speaking country which is a mere 90 minute sail from Sardinia.

view over Sidi Bou said, Tunisia

Tunisia is blessed with several superyacht marinas, including Port Yasmine near Hammamet, Bizerte and Port Marina de Gammarth. They have been a popular destination, welcoming the Mediterrranean superyacht community for many years due to excellent quality duty free fuel, customs and immigration departments who make any paperwork as easy as possible, and as a provisioning stop to take advantage of Tunisia’s world class fresh local produce.

As well as the advantages of being a non-EU country so close to the Mediterranean, Tunisia is a hub of history and culture and makes a fantastic destination for owners and charter guests keen to explore outside the usual yacht spots. French is Tunisia’s second language and all residents are taught French from a very early age, as well as English in more recent years so there won’t be a language barrier with anyone you meet.

Street in Tunisia

Tunisia has a rich cultural heritage having been settled in by the Moors and the Romans. Carthage and its world famous ruins are breathtaking and only 30 minutes or so from popular Hammammet in the north. Hammammet also has fantastic shopping in both traditional souks and new, very modern shopping malls with lots of brands names you know and love.

view of ruins at carthage, Tunisia

The Bardo museum houses rich displays of Tunisian history within the walls of Husseinite palace, as well as an additional contemporary building added on to increase exhibition space. As well as Roman sarcophaguses, Punic jewels and precious cargo from a Roman ship wreck, the museum is home to the largest collection of mosaics in the world. These mosaics are astounding and must be seen in person to fully appreciate the sheer magnitude of work that went into these masterpieces.

Bardo Museum Mosaic

Sidi Bou Said is also very much worthy of a visit. This is the picture perfect, idyllic village you‘ll see in many depictions of Tunisia. Built on a hill over looking a lovely small leisure marina with stunning mountain ranges in view across the bay, this is the place to experience the Tunisian picture you probably have in your mind. Full of boutique restaurants you will be spoiled for choice and we definitely recommend visiting Café Sidi Chebaane for the best views, a great mint tea, and pastries to die for.

Moving south we start to find places made famous in some very recognizable TV and films. Monty Python’s Life of Brian was filmed in Monastir, in and around a Ribat (castle) that was also a monastery at one point. Whether you are a fan or not, we highly recommend a visit to this beautiful place.

Slightly further south, you will find El Djem and its huge and very well maintained amphitheatre. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 the amphitheatre continues to be a cultural centre with theatre, opera and a range of classical and modern music performed there. The Romans seem to know a lot about building practical and beautiful structures and the ambiance and sound quality in this epic architecture are exquisite.

A little further south again and its back to film sets from one of the most famous films of all time. Located at a place called Tozeur  you will find the film set for parts of the very first, original Star Wars: A New Hope, and the fictional Tatooine is also named after the real life city Tataouine in Tunisia. Tataouine also appeared in The X-Files – in the end of the The X-Files movie as Foum Tataouine, making this a double movie buff destination!

Town featured in Starwars in the Sahara Desert, Tunisia

While you are in the southern part of the country, at the start of the Sahara desert, you can experience all sorts of desert activities. Night camping, camel riding trips and 4×4 motor cross days are very popular and usually come with a team of local residents who will cook you traditional Tunisian cuisine in stone earth ovens, or you can bring your own provisions if you prefer.

The sublime team at Yacht Services Tunisia are the best superyacht contacts you could have in this area. Founders Kim and Duncan sailed into Tunisia 12 years ago and never left. They know every corner of Tunisian life and can take care of everything you could possible need during your visit. They also have great taste in wine and food so be sure to take advantage of their recommendations.

YS Tunisia have offices in Port Yasmine, Bizerte and Marina Gammarth, have excellent relationships with customs and immigration and can deal with all the paperwork before you even arrive. Then they can arrange for bunkering, provisioning and organise the most fantastic trips to some of Tunisia’s famous places.

Rows of colourful spices piled high in the Tunisian Souk

We particularly like the YS Tunisia ‘Follow Me’ program for yachts that wish to experience everything Tunisia has to offer. They meet you in the northern tip of Tunisia usually in Bizerte, and then follow your yacht along the coast line meeting up with you along the way to take you and your guests on cultural trips, picturesque viewpoints, shopping in the souks, and out to experience the delectable Tunisian foods at the very best restaurants. The same team follows you for the entire trip and is on call to help with anything you might need at a moments notice.

We can’t finish without mentioning the taste sensations on offer. Tunisia doesn’t import very much food at all and are almost self-sufficient. Most foods, herbs and spices are freshly and organically grown in their rich soils. They have excellent, I mean really excellent olive oil and their beef, lamb and chicken is also free range and chemical free. Tunisia is named after the Tuna run and the Med’s finest tuna skirt the coast and end up on the plates of locals and visitors alike.

Le Pirate Restaurant Sidi Bou Said Marina

We love that almost every coastal restaurant has its own little fishing team. Rather than commercial fishermen bringing in the catch of the day, each restaurant goes out in a little boat sand catches the fish they will need. The seas are clean and well stocked throughout Tunisia, and we enjoyed some of the finest fresh fish we have ever tasted. Yacht chefs regularly come and stock up their freezers with meat and fish and save an absolute fortune whilst buying some of the best produce in the world.

We hope you add Tunisia back into your travel itinerates for 2018 and for anything you need at all, we recommend you contact Kim and Duncan at Yacht Services Tunisia by emailing info@ys-tunisia.com, calling +216 98364875 or visiting their website ys-tunisia.com.
